Song: Chait Maas Bolele Koyeliya (light classical song called ‘chaiti’)
‘Chaiti’ is a light classical form that originated in the western belt of India with strong influences of the folk music of the region. It is a seasonal song sung during the lunar month in the Hindu calendar marking the celebrations that follow the harvesting period (February-March) in agricultural India. In the Hindu calendar of ancient India, this was considered the first month of the year.
‘Chait Maas Bolele Koyeliya Ho Rama’, (how wonderfully the cuckoo sings in the month of chait) is set to a 14-beat cycle called Deepchandi taal. This tala is a common fixture with light classical compositions of northern India. This composition is one from Ankalikar’s brilliant repertoire that sparkles in the beauty of her deep, sensuous voice.
Providing a beautiful lilt to this piece is Anubrata Chatterjee on the tabla, Chinmay Kolhatkar on the harmonium and Omkar Dalvi on the pakhawaj. This is an uplifting piece, a refreshing shift from the heavier compositions and ragas that usually form the piece de resistance of a concert. It brings in the much-needed relief from a somber atmosphere with its sensuous gait, upbeat movements and a colourful and romantic bouquet of expressions.
