Ustad Irshad Khan | Surbahar & Jori Duet

This performance features Ustad Irshad Khan, a towering exponent of the illustrious Etawah (Imdadkhani) gharana, whose ancestors famously shaped the design and vocal-style (gayaki ang) of the modern sitar.

In this concert, Ustad Khan commands the majestic surbahar (bass sitar), guiding the music through an incredible emotional evolution. The performance travels from the deep, majestic strains of Raag Darbari Kanada into the heady romance of Raag Bihag set to a rapid Teental cycle, culminating in an explosive jhalla crescendo. To close, the maestro offers a soulful vocal snippet before translating a playful, light-hearted North Indian folk melody based in Raag Khamaj onto his strings.

Partnering with him is the legendary Sukhwinder Singh ‘Pinky’ on the jori. Singh’s legendary, open-handed playing adds immense vigor to the performance, culminating in an extraordinary, rapid-fire trade of crisp musical energies that leaves audiences spellbound.
