S5 EP3 | Manjiri Asnare-Kelkar
53m
Asanare sings Raisa Kanada and Daguri, two ragas from the Jaipur-Atrauli repertoire with remarkable flair and fluency. She elaborates both ragas with a steady voice exposing their exquisite nuances in detail. She raises her game with command and control delivering taans (rapid notes) in four times the rhythmic tempo of the madhyalay (medium tempo) compositions. Vishwanath Shirodkar gives a lyrical accompaniment to the recital.
Born into a family of Maharashtra musicians, Asanare started learning vocal music aged six, first under MT Mhaiskar and later with MS Kanetkar of the Jaipur gharana. She excelled academically too, receiving a classical music scholarship at university. Her approach is methodical, as is typical for her Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and often imbued with rhythmic strength - perhaps influenced by her training in kathak dance, and by growing up around her tabla-playing father. Today she goes from strength to strength, exploring rare ragas alongside popular classics.
Vishwanath Shirodkar was initiated into learning the tabla from Shri Suryakant Naik, and later on from Vibhav Nageshkar for 12 years. At present, he is undertaking advance training from Pt. Suresh Talwalkar becoming adept as an accompanist and learning to apply the lyrical nuances to the tabla. A civil engineer by education, he gave up a promising career to dedicate his life to Indian classical music.
