Ken Zuckerman gives an exceptional performance of Raag Durgeshwari, a melody that was popularized by his guru Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in the 60’s. This is his concluding piece at the Darbar Festival 2007 which was held in Leicester at the Phoenix.
Raag Durgeshwari embodies a sumptuous blend of four beautiful ragas – ragas Durga, Jhinjhoti, Goud Malhar and Kukubh Bilawal, which Ustad Khan has always hailed as a creation of his father, Baba Alauddin Khan of the Maihar gharana.
The first gat is set to taal sitarkhani, a variant of Teental in which Zukerman plumbs the beauty of this rare melody with a stirring alap. The second composition is set to a faster tempo in Teental. In an eagerly enticing manner, he renders the cascade of swaras of this cocktail raga with vibrant phrases and stunning improvisations.
Partha Sarathi Mukherjee blends in with the recital with innovative bols and controlled interspersions. Zukerman concludes his recital with this raga, leaving listeners soothed and surprising everybody once again with his profound knowledge and craftsmanship of his art.
