Gopalnath performs a popular ‘kirtana’ by Purandara Dasa (1484-1565) leaving his audiences enthralled. The song is set to Raag Sindhu Bhairavi in adi talam. Dr. Gopalnath plays the entire song with brisk improvisations in between. It is a lively composition and sets the stage for yet another devotional song that follows thereafter.
Jyotsna Srikanth (violin), Bangalore Praveen (mridangam) and RN Prakash (ghatam) give excellent support to the saxophone maestro with great anticipation within short spaces of improvisations and their intense involvement in each part of this fast-paced composition.
Raag Sindhu Bhairavi belongs to both the Carnatic and Hindustani genres. In the Carnatic system, it is a derived (janya) raga of the 8th Melakarta parent scale Hanumatodi. In the Hindustani system, it is derived from the Asavari thaat. This raga elicits the feelings of devotion as much as it elicits pangs of separation, sorrow and compassion. It uses all the notes in the octave. The dominant note is Dha (6th) and the sub-dominant is Ga (3rd).
