Start your journey into the rhythm of Indian classical music with the first module of the Indian Music Appreciation Course. Here, well-known percussionist Sukhdeep Dhanjal gives an inside look at Taal, the repeating rhythm cycle that has shaped Indian music for hundreds of years.
Unlike Western bars, a Taal is a full cycle of time that repeats, much like a planet orbiting a star. In this session, you’ll learn about the basic parts of rhythm:
The Structure of a Taal: Get to know key elements like Matra (beat), Vibhag (measure), and Sam—the first beat that acts as the focal point in every piece.
The Drum’s Language: See how the Tabla communicates using rhythmic syllables called Bols, such as Dha, Dhin, and Na. These sounds come together to form complex, almost poetic patterns.
Rhythmic Math: Find out how players use claps (Taali) and waves (Khali) to guide their way through cycles like the 16-beat Teental.
This session aims to change how you listen to rhythm, turning what might seem like a wall of sound into a clear, meaningful conversation between the soloist and the drummer.
