Dr Prabha Atre (13 September 1932 – 13 January 2024)
Dr Prabha Atre had captivated audiences with a refined style, covering ragas, khayal, tarana, thumri, ghazal, and bhajan.
Prabha Atre did not originally plan to pursue a musical career. But at the age of eight, when her mother was ill, a friend suggested classical singing lessons to lift her spirits. The young Prabha was inspired by overhearing these lessons and began studying with Kirana gharana gurus, including Sureshbabu Mane and Hirabai Badodekar. She also credited Amir Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan with influencing her gayaki. Atre earned degrees in both science and law and completed a PhD on the use of sargam in Indian classical music. Throughout her illustrious career, she captivated audiences with her refined style, performing a wide range of forms including ragas, khayal, tarana, thumri, ghazal, and bhajan. Prabha Atre's passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a profound legacy in Indian classical music.
